Lancashire Carpet Bowls are the Association that has been formed to run carpet bowls in Lancashire. The Association was formed on 11 February 2026 and will assist any clubs or community groups that would like to start up carpet bowls. At the moment, as far as we are aware, carpet bowls only takes place in Ormskirk.

Our aim is to build up the number of players so Lancashire can field a team in the northern division of the county championship, other teams being Sunderland, Northumberland and County Durham at present. The governing body for the sport is the English Carpet Bowls Association and Lancashire Carpet Bowls are indebted for the help that they have given us in starting our Association.

Carpet Bowls should not be confused with short mat bowls or with the small bowls you can buy to use in your home. In carpet bowls the game is played on a 30ft carpet with miniaturised bowls, which are roughly the same size as a crown green jack. This allows for a very skilful and tactical game. Unlike short mat bowls, you do not need your own bowls as these are always provided as part of the kit and there is no need for a ‘gutter’ or to chalk bowls. In addition 8 people can play at the same time in teams of 4, as well as in triples, pairs or singles. A short video on carpet bowls can be viewed below.
